Consumer Finance Symposium

The Australian Centre for Financial Studies partners wtih Finsia to bring the annual Consumer Finance Symposium to the finance industry professional.

The annual event’s objectives are to develop a suite of policy and campaign initiatives for research and advocacy activities; create FINSIA-member, policy-maker and community awareness of the relative severity of issues impacting upon Australian and New Zealand household balance sheets and stimulate research on consumer finance issues, including identifying academics with interests in the area.

The 2010 Symposium will address important public policy issues impacting financial wellbeing in retirement including longevity risk and post-retirement income streams as well as the opportunities for financial advisers, superannuation funds and product providers.

A monograph Financial Wellbeing in Retirement will be released at the Symposium, which will explore the policy issues needing to be addressed to enable more Australians to achieve financial security in retirement. It is envisaged that the monograph will explore international best practice models as well as relevant Henry tax review and Cooper super review recommendations.

This event attracts an audience of 100 attendees consisting of consumer lenders, financial advisors and product designers, policy-makers and community leaders, academic researchers and educators. The Symposium will also be of interest to retail bankers, stock and mortgage brokers, finance company principals, senior financial planners, micro-financiers and practitioners, regulators or observers of consumer finance and investment issues.

The event is conducted in two parts, with Finsia conducting morning industry workshops and ACFS afternoon academic sessions which involve presentations of selected academic, regulatory and policy centre working papers; panel sessions involving industry representatives identifying important issues for future research and open forum discussion of possible research agendas and academic-industry cooperation.
